Propecia for Hair Loss

About Hair Loss (Male Pattern Baldness)

Propecia (Finasteride 1mg) is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area. Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp. Propecia is a tablet taken orally, once daily by men with male pattern baldness. It can prevent or reverse hair loss by reducing the effect of hormones on hair follicles. It is effective in 90% of men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness, and so provides a highly effective solution for men seeking to regrow their hair.

Suffering hair loss can be a traumatic experience. While some embrace baldness, for others, it can be a confidence denting experience. Propecia is the first pill that effectively treats male pattern baldness. It is an oral medication that you take once a day, with or without food, morning or night. Propecia (active ingredient Finasteride) is a prescription-only medicine, and is an excellent help in the battle against male pattern hair loss. Propecia is for use by MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children.

How Propecia Works

In certain tissues in the body particularly the prostate, skin and the scalp, testosterone converts to a much more potent androgen, known as DHT (or dihydrotestosterone). At these sites, it stimulates the cells, for example, in the skin it increases production of sebum, while in the prostate its influence leads to enlarging of the cells. The enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into this more potent form is a 5-alpha Reductase, with the type 2 isozyme found predominantly in the areas mentioned above. Administration of Propecia inhibits the effect of 5α-Reductase, preventing testosterone from being metabolized.  Most importantly, Propecia helps grow natural hair, and is as convenient to take as a vitamin.

When a man takes Propecia; testosterone in the body does not get converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). This allows levels in the scalp drop off and the hair stops thinning. In many cases, affected hair follicles enlarge and larger, thicker hairs grow in. Propecia works for about 90 percent of men who have male pattern baldness, Propecia hair-raising success is due to its ability to specifically inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into a more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Propecia 1 mg dose can effectively lower DHT levels in the scalp by as much as 60% when taken daily. It is DHT that shrinks or miniaturizes the hair follicle, which eventually leads to baldness. This 60% reduction in DHT has proven to stop the progression of hair loss in 86% of men taking the Propecia during clinical trials. 65% of trial participants had what was considered a substantial increase of hair growth. At this point, the only truly effective medically proven way to arrest the hair loss process is to lower DHT levels. The American Hair Loss Association recommends Propecia as the first line of attack for all men interested in treating their male pattern baldness.

How Effective Is Propecia

Propecia effectiveness often depends on the length of time it is taken for, but the evidence available suggests that 90% of men who use it see an improvement, while two thirds benefit from renewed hair growth. Propecia is a tablet taken once a day by men with male pattern baldness. It reduces the effect of hormones on hair follicles, thereby preventing and even reversing hair loss. It is effective in 90% of men with mild to moderate male pattern baldness, and is most effective if taken for more than 12 months. Propecia promotes scalp hair growth and prevents further hair loss in a significant proportion of men with male pattern hair loss. Propecia is very effective for treating hair loss, and it works quite well for several patients. For Propecia to be effective, you have to wait for the results to emerge, as the process is often slow and can take up to 1 to 2 years.

On stopping Propecia, hair loss will usually resume after six to twelve months. It is important to use Propecia regularly to get the most benefit. You may need to take Propecia daily for three months or more before you see a benefit. Propecia can only work over the long term if you continue taking it. If you stop taking Propecia, you will likely lose the hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping treatment. In general, daily use for three months or more is necessary before benefit is observed. Continued use is recommended to sustain benefit, which should be re-evaluated periodically. Withdrawal of treatment leads to reversal of effect within 12 months. According to multiple studies conducted on the drug that 1mg of Propecia can reduce DHT up to 60% – a decrease that significantly slows or even prevents further hair loss in most guys. Researchers found that at a dose of 1mg/ day for a year the vast majority of men had marked improvement of hair loss symptoms, especially in the frontal area.

The findings showed than in men with hair loss in the anterior/mid area of the scalp, Propecia 1mg/day slowed hair loss and increased hair growth. 9 out of 10 men noticed improvement in their hair loss – most men stopped losing their hair, and some also saw regrowth. The studies were made in men aged 18-41 with mild to moderate hair loss.
